International Baccalaureate (I.B.)

To further promote its educational standards level, in 1995 T.I.S joined the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate Organization. Another major motivation beyond this move was to render global facilities to foreigners residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The certificate, originally issued by the IB Organization itself, allows its holder the possibility to enter most of well-know universities all around the world eliminating the necessity to participate in entrance exams.

The International Baccalaureate program is a two-year pre-university course leading either to the IB diploma or to separate subject certificates, depending on the student's abilities and plans for further education. A unique and highly respected academic program, the IB is now recognized by colleges and universities in countries on six continents.

Students of every nationality may participate in the two-year program; however, they must demonstrate competency in the language of instruction before beginning work leading to an IB diploma or IB individual subject certificates, and  must have satisfied the prerequisites of the individual IB courses. Students who complete the IB diploma and wish to pursue higher education in the U.S. are normally granted advanced placement in American colleges and universities.

The Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Organization's Diploma Programme (DP) , created in 1968, is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations; it is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19. The program has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the world's leading universities. The IBO has shown, over the course of 30 years, that students are well prepared for university work.

The Diploma Programme's grading system is criterion referenced: each student's performance is measured against well defined levels of achievement consistent from one examination session to the next. Grades reflect attainment of knowledge and skills relative to set standards that are applied equally to all schools. Top grades are not, for example, awarded to a certain percentage of students.

Two additional  features of curriculum are described as follows.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)  is an interdisciplinary requirement intended to stimulate critical reflection on knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. the course challenges students to question the bases of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases and to develop the ability to analyse evidence. TOK is a key element in encouraging students to appreciate other cultural perspectives. The minimum of 100 hours of teaching time is required for this subject.

Creativity, Action, Service  (CAS) The IBO's goal is to educate the whole person, to help students become responsible, compassionate citizens. The CAS requirement encourages students to share their energy and social talents with others: students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and community service activities. Students should, through these activities, develop grater awareness of themselves and concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people.

Creativity includes a wide range of arts activities but can also be defined as the creativity students show in designing and implementing service projects. Action can include not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or internationl projects. Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities, such as helping children with special needs, visiting hospitals and working with refugees or homeless people.

Assessing Student Work and Awarding the Diploma

Classroom teachers and IB examiners work in partnership to ensure that students have ample opportunity to demonstrate what they  have learned. Responsibility for all academic judgments about the quality of candidates' work rests with some 3,400 IB examiners worldwide, led by chief examiners with international authority in their fields. Over 40,000 students annually are assessed by the IBO. Each year approximately 80% of candidates who attempt the diploma are awarded it.

Examinations are offered in May for northern hemisphere schools and in November for the southern hemisphere.
